The annual Harlan County Poke Sallet Festival will start June 4th and run to June 6th. This means we will have some road and parking closings. All vehicles must be moved from these areas or they will be towed at the owner's expense.
On Monday June 1st at 5:00 pm, the parking lot next to Harlan City Hall will be closed. This is for the carnival to move in and set-up. It will remain closed for the duration of the festival.
On Wednesday June 3rd at Midnight, the parking lot next to the Harlan Center will be closed for the duration. Only vendors and those with passes will be allowed.
On Thursday June 4th at 2:00 pm, Main Steet from KY 38 to Clover Street will be closed to all traffic for the duration.
On Friday June 5th at Midnight, First Street from Central Street to Clover Street will be closed until after the car show on Saturday.
All vehicles must be moved prior to the closings or they will be towed at the owner's expense. Sorry for any inconvenience and have a safe and happy Poke Sallet Festival.

Take a minute today to think of all who have served our country. Many have gave the ultimate price. Many more are currently serving. So let's remember them all and say a little prayer for them and their families. Have a safe holiday. And remember this marks the start of summer and the start of the Click-it or Ticket campaign. Officers are currently focusing on seatbelts and making our roadways safer.

Since doing the webpage and doing the officer bio's, I have been asked what is an intermediate and advance officer. So allow me to give you a brief explanation.
These are certificates given by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council through their career development program. Officers are required to have at least 40 hours of in-service every year. The KLEC encourages officers to plan their in-service to reach goals and specific training areas. Many different certificates are offered based on your type of service. Certificates for officers, dispatchers, detectives and supervisors are offered. To achieve a certain certificate, an officer must have a large number of hours in different areas along with a specified number of years as an officer.
For example, the intermediate takes 160 hours and at least 4 years of service. In order to achieve the advanced, you must be a certified intermediate and another 160 hours and 8 years of service.
These are great accomplishments that not only the officers and the department can be proud of but also for the citizens knowing that they have well qualified and trained officers serving them. This department will continue in this program as all officers work toward these and other certificates.

Hello to all. Thanks for stopping by our website. It has been gone for a while but we have it back up again. It should look simular to what you remember. I did add a couple of new features. One is the department history tab. Look here and you will read a great story in Harlan PD history. Harlan PD has been in service since April 1912. The story is about Chief Pope being killed in the line of duty in 1922. Fortunately, he has been the only officer killed in the line of duty from our department(that I have found anyway). The other new feature is this blog. Here I will put up information that may be helpful to the public of what is happening around our city and department. Check back often, I will try to update at least once a week or more often if needed. Please feel free to contact me or any of our officers at the office or by email. Any suggestions, questions or comments are welcomed. Thanks again, Chief Thomas.
