Harlan Police Department earns accreditation through the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) in July 2006, becoming the only law enforcement agency in southeastern Kentucky to be accredited. Only 15 percent of Kentucky's 400-plus law enforcement agencies have attained accredited status.

  Accreditation means that Harlan Police Department meets or exceeds professionally accepted practices in law enforcement. The accreditation process involves a progressive assessment of policies and procedures that cover 157 standards related to a department's operations and personnel. All policies and procedures must be put in writing, and employees must be trained in their use.
